Would You Knowingly Poison Yourself?

Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” but he didn’t mean the kind of food we are being exposed to now a days such as Genetically Modified Foods. GMO’s are food items that have had their DNA changed through genetic engineering. Unlike conventional genetic modification that is carried out through time-tested conventional breeding of plants and animals. Combining genes from different organisms is known as recombinant DNA technology, and the resulting organism is said to be genetically modified, genetically engineered, or transgenic.

California recently came very close to passing the first statewide initiative in America that would have mandated the labeling of food if genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) were an ingredient. Prop 37 was known as the ”The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.”

The initiative was defeated when over one million dollars a day by big companies were pumped into deceptive advertising in the final thirty days of the campaign. These companies included, Monsanto, Dupont, PepsiCo, Kraft Foods Global and Coca Cola North America. Over $45 million was donated to defeat a measure that would have given us the right to know what is in our food. Why don’t these companies and many more, not want us to know that are food has been genetically modified?

Some estimates say there are as many as 30,000 products on grocery store shelves that have been “modified.” This is mainly due to most processed foods contain soy and half of American soy crops are genetically engineered. Common GMO foods include, soybeans, milk, potatoes, tomatoes, papaya, corn, meats, yellow squash, zucchini, canola oil, vegetable oil, and aspartame. Potential dangers of GMO foods are tumors, cancers and digestive issues.
